SP–Foto 2011


Exhibiting the best of contemporary photography in Brazil and across the globe, and celebrating a sector in the market which is increasingly becoming more important, SP-Arte/Foto/2011 reached its 5th edition, opening on September 14 at Shopping Iguatemi São Paulo. The most prestigious photographic encounter in Latin America brought together approximately 750 works by 26 Brazilian and international galleries and presented works by artists including Albano Afonso, Caio Reisewitz, , Claudia Jaguaribe, Geraldo de Barros, Lucia Koch, Luiz Braga, Rochelle Costi, Márcia Xavier, Marina Abramovic, Massimo Vitali, Robert Polidori, and Thomas Farkas, among other Brazilian photography icons.

Highlights included seven new galleries that work with young photographers including the Sao Paulo based spaces, Transversal, Fauna, Arterix, Central, Lume, Escritório de Fotografias Luiz Porchat and the Spanish gallery, Sendas. “This confirms the vitality that photography has among young artists. It is an additional medium through which they can express their creativity”, states Fernanda Feitosa, director of the Fair.

In order to expand the public’s awareness and understanding on photography, the Fair promoted discussions with a critical bias. The artist, professor, and specialist in contemporary art Denise Gadelha organized a series of debates open to the public with artists, critics, and international guests on September 15,16, and 17.

The Fair also held book releases; the children’s book Imita Bichos, illustrated by Aleksandr Rodchenko and written by Serguéi Tretiakov was released on September 15 by Cosac Naify and the latest book by the photographer, Pedro Martinelli, Martinelli, Pedro, published by Terra Virgem was launched on September 17 along with a book signing by the artist.
