SP–Arte teams with Galeria Jaqueline Martins in an institutional partnership to launch the sixth edition of Cápsula, a public program conceived by the gallery, with critics and curators Mirtes Marins de Oliveira and Lisette Lagnado.

The sixth edition of the program reunites the Spanish curators Agustín Pérez Rubio and María Iñigo Clavo aiming to discuss the role of major cultural institutions in the process of critical deconstruction of colonial history’s hegemonic narrative.

On Saturday, May 28, Agustín Pérez Rubio will approach the subject of colonial denialism, analyzing the censorship of the monographic exhibit of the Spanish-Peruvian artist Sandra Gamarra Heshiki called “Buen Gobierno” at Sala Alcalá 31. Right before the opening of the exhibit in September 2021, Madrid’s Cultural Council ordered the removal of the words “racism” and “restitution” from the exhibit’s opening text, commissioned to integrate the festival of celebration of former Spanish colonies. The fact exposes unresolved conflicts and difficulties in Hispanic cultures in recognizing issues that question a past of violences which reverberate until the present day.

On the following Saturday, June 4, the teacher María Iñigo Clavo will approach other artistic and curatorial practices mentioning the contexts of Brazil and Spain. Her research is dedicated to the understanding of relations of power between Europe and Latin America and the representation of national history in the system of art.

Cápsula 6 will be transmitted live at SP–Arte and the Gallery’s YouTube channels.
