Adriana Varejão
Brazil, 1964
One of the most internationally acknowledged contemporary Brazilian artists, Adriana Varejão, depicts themes such as art history, religious art, history of Brazil and China, and marine landscapes to create art works consistently centered on the body. And her paintings and sculptures are characterized by revealing entrails within the works themselves. She is the first Brazilian artist to have, in life, artwork acquired by an institution of international renown, such as the Tate Modern. Varejão also reveals her references – drawn from highly detailed studies – in her use of baroque elements, including excess and ornamentation, and in depictions of the Chinese ceramics of the Song period (960-1279), which served as inspiration for tiles with a Craquelure finish.
