SP-Arte laments the passing of artist Rosemarie Castoro

According to gallery Broadway 1602 in New York, artist Rosemarie Castoro has died at the age of 76 last monday.

The gallery presented works by Castoro on SP-Arte/2015 as it took part at the Fair’s Solo section, curated by Rodrigo Moura and María Inés Rodriguéz.

Castoro was a central figure among New York Minimalist artists and one of the few highly recognized women working in this milieu. Born in Brooklyn, she collaborated with modern dance pioneer Yvonne Rainer. She was known for her paintings but also more recently her work in sculpture.

Her work is the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey; the University Art Museum, Berkeley; and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris; among other venues.

A statement released today by her gallery noted that “she was acutely aware that women artists working in a formalist style milieu were not spared the gender-based dismissal of the time,” even while she remained “strictly dedicated to her non-representational abstract style of work.”
